Where to start Atlantic Coast Ride in South Carolina?
« on: January 30, 2010, 10:26:57 am »
I'm planning my next bike tour and I need some local advice. My current idea is to ride north up the Atlantic Coast from somewhere in South Carolina to Lambertville, New Jersey, where I have family.

I'm California born and bred and have never been to South Carolina. I do know that Charleston is an old town and right on the coast but know next to nothing about other interesting places that might work for a starting location.

What I'd like is a place that is easy to fly into and ride a bike out of. My wife will join me for a few days before I start the ride, so I'd like a place that is good for a few days sightseeing (by car or foot), as well.

Someone suggested Savannah as a starting point. I've never been to either.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Ray

Charleston and Savannah are great places to see and start your trip, however they might be expensive to fly into. FYI, I use to live in Morristown, N.J., not far from Lambertville and also lived in Greensboro, N.C. May I make one other suggestion, although not as picturesque as the above cities, I would consider Myrtle Beach, S.C. Since it has more golf courses than you can shake a stick, you might be able to find an inexpensive charter flight or junket. Near the beach, younger, wilder, and just plain different. (If you go there, you will understand what I mean) I hope this helps you :)

If your choices are either Charlston or Savannah, then Charleston is the hands-down winner.

I was stationed at Charleston AFB for two years a long time ago.  Seeing the gigantic houses on the battery that survive hurricane after hurricane for more than a century are worth the trip.
