Kennedy Launch
« on: February 22, 2010, 09:24:59 pm »
Has anyone here ever gotten to see a launch at the Kennedy Space Center while on tour.  They tell me we can't bike in on launch day.  So I guess we'll have to rent a car.  They also insist on FedEx delivery of materials.  It looks like we'll be well on our way before the tickets are for sale (last shuttle launch in september) so we'd need to figure out how to get that stuff to us.

Or anyone see launches from outside?  Where?  Any info is welcome.

The closest I've made it is Orlando and the launch is very impressive even from that distance. The difficult part is that the launch gets postponed often and for no apparent reason (at least to the casual observer). As you can understand, they like to make sure that all one billion parts it takes to make a space shuttle are working prior to launch. You need to be flexible in your schedule and be willing to go early because viewing locations  fill up quickly at least where you can see the launch clock and / or the pad. If you don't feel you need to be right at the launch site, any place with in 20 miles you can see everything with the exception of it leaving the pad. You'll be impressed, it's a gross display of horsepower that you sure don't get to see very often. Sorry I don't have any more specific info for you but I do know that people show up days in advance in big RVs and just wait it out so that is really what you'll be up against when going over to the coast.

Hi go to Cocoa Beach, or the road leading to where the Cruise Liners dock at Cape Canaveral.  Park up just before the last bridge.  Def go by car as not the best cycling route from Orlando.  Plus as the last person said - they get cancelled regularily.  Despite getting up early on several occassions still haven't managed to see a launch ??? But I like Cocoa Beach.

Good luck
