Cycle lane or another sad joke
« on: March 01, 2010, 11:33:53 am »
Hi take a look at this cycle lane - I dare anyone to use it.  Is this just another example of the authorities putting cyclists in danger just to meet government target for providing cycle lanes.  The link below is to my Facebook log and safe but if you don't want to look basically the lane is on cobble stones, about 12" wide with a drop of about 6' into a canal directly on one side with no barriers.  It has to be someones idea of a joke!

I never realized that there were people against bikers until I read some posts on this board that described it.

Tony,

We would relish a bike lane period in my part of Florida. Depending on the time of year, If the water wasn't too polluted and if it is hot enough I might jump in, since it doesn't look like any Gators are in the canal. It is obvious no one in their right mind would use this bike lane. It truly is a joke. Those of us, who are not blessed with good bike lanes, on a daily basis, it is truly an uphill battle. I honestly don't think I will see it in Tampa, Fl, in my lifetime:(

A real problem with bike lanes in the northwest is that all winter and for a good part of the spring, the lane is full of sand, dirt, broken glass and other garbage.  The sand and dirt is from the sanding for ice/snow and often does not get cleaned off until May of June.   I really rely on a mirror so I know when I have to get off the road and onto the lane.
May the wind be at your back!

Thanks MucKnort for putting pic on screen, must learn how to do that.  Here in UK I could fill this forum up with stupid box ticking pics of useless cycle lanes.

As for jumping in believe me you don't want to swim in any of the canals -I would take a chance on the gators any time. In fact down in the Florida keys rode past quite a few on the side of the road and none of them blinked an eye.  Didn't stop though!  We also have a couple in the ponds where I have a house in Celebration Fl - I don't swim there either  ;)
And destination if you really want to read some of vitriol put out against cyclists check out the forum on  http://www.canalworld.net/ a normally peace loving bunch until they get to cyclists & fishermen.  Maybe it's the noise from the wheels that drive dogs mad it also effects some humans.

There are some really bad ones around but the figures show something like they represent 0.001% of people who write on these blogs. So we don't need to get paranoid.  It's the people we vote in who seem to have a problem with us ie the pictures and the rubbish dumped in the correct size lanes.  I'm with John on needing a mirror -

They sweep the bike lanes in your neck of the woods?  Wow!  Here in Philly we have to rely on mother nature (in the form of rain) to wash the sand away.  It's truly pathetic.

Tony, Thank you for the link. Since they are in the 0.001%  I think I will pass for today (and get a mirror)
