Advice on riding from San Fran to Portland

Hi all,

I am looking for general advice on riding from San Francisco to Portland via the coastal route.  My partner and I have been cycle touring round South America for the last 6 months, so we have some experience touring, but this will be our first trip in North America.  We generally average about 50 miles a day, depending on the terrain. We are planning on riding the route in April, and I wondered roughly how long it has taken other cyclists to do the route?  Any top tips or general advice on route planning/weather/places to camp or stay would be greatly appreciated.  My partner is also a keen mountain biker so if there are any day trips (and mountain bike hire) we can do along the way might also be of interest to us.

Also, we will be staying in Los Altos Hills on the south side of San Fran so we would love some advice on the best way to get to the coastal route on a bike (or otherwise).
