Ha gotcha, actually I need to buy medicine while in the USA as our NHS won't give me/sell me enough to cover the entire trip.

Do I have to register with a Doctor or can I go into a pharmacy and buy medicine I need Losec daily which isn't available over the counter here. How can I do it?

I think that is the same as Prolosec which is available as an over the counter purchase (Prilosec OTC).  Double check, but I think Prilosec OTC is probably what you want.

I have my doctor write me 1 or more prescriptions for 30 day supplies.   That way you don't have to carry so much and get them refilled as needed.

Ok the active ingredient is omeprazole.

Spokey are you from the UK as I am and not sure if our prescriptions are accepted in USA.

You may find it difficult to get a perscription filled when you present a non local address.  You should check with a drugest.

no, i'm here in central nj, usa.  I would think your doctor would know the answer to that question.  If you can't find out, let me know and I'll ask my local pharmacy.  They might not know thought as it is a small locally owned business. 

I am pretty sure our prescriptions have some DEA identifier on it so maybe it is a problem.

I also have a friend who is married to a cannuck.  Maybe she has some idea.  His parents are still in Canada and they go there once in awhile.

Prilosec OTC by Procter & Gamble and Zegerid OTC by Schering-Plough are both available over the counter (without prescription).  If in doubt ask your doctor if they are OK.

I asked on a touring mailing list and the opinion was (one person said they asked their pharmacist) no.

The best recommendation (other than getting enough in the UK which you indicate you cannot do) was to get the prescription there and go to a local here and show it.  Someone also suggested putting it online so that it is available if need be.

I don't know about the rest of the country but here in the NE we have a lot of walk in clinic types.  They tend to be more expensive, but that might be the best bet.

My daughter recently moved from the US to Germany and had the same problem.  The Pharmacist in Germany couldn't legally fill her US prescription and she had to get a local MD to issue one.  The German Dr. did so with no problems but the prescription had to be local to be acceptable.

YeaH a lot of drugs which are legal in US forbiden in Europe, or you need special prescription

Thanks everyone this has been so helpful, I will ask at the pharmacy first and then I guess ring up a doc from the yellow pages.
