Would it work better to rent bikes in Seattle and bike the islands, returning the renta bikes back to Seattle or would it make more sense to rent bikes on each island every couple of days?

San Juan Islands biking
« on: March 21, 2010, 12:28:12 pm »
We are going to San Juan Islands this summer and will be riding several islands (Lopez, Orcas, San Juan), but don't want to bring our bikes from Chicago. What is the best way to rent bikes on our self-guided trip? Some people have said that we should rent them at each island and then return them before boarding the ferry for the next island. Does this make sense? We are in our 60's and are good bikers and will be staying in nice Inns for about 5 or 6 nights before returning to Seattle for the flight home. Suggestions? Karen

Gee, we found the ferries to be real bike friendly (except for the sign to take off cleats when going up onto the passenger deck).  How's the rest of your luggage getting from inn to inn?  If you are using panniers, then I suggest rent once and be done with it.  If the Skagit Bike Shop in Anacortes rents bikes, then you can take a shuttle bus from SeaTac to within about 2 blocks of the bike shop.
