Granny gear for 10 speed triple
« on: April 24, 2010, 12:13:20 pm »
I have a Cannondale Touring 1, came with Shimano 105 triple 50,39,30 and 11,32 ten speed cassette. Want to change out the 30 chainring for 26 or 24 for better hill climbing. Have found 5 bolt 26t chainrings but they say they are 8, 9 speed compatible, any suggestions.

You may have to consider changing out the rear dérailleur. I had 28-44-50 on my older Cannondale it shifted fine but it had a longer dérailleur. I am not sure about a ten speed rear cassette.

Put it on, it will shift fine if, as noted above, the rear derailleur will take-up the extra chain.  With that kind of range, however, I would recommend the $10 "N Gear" as insurance against the chain not catching the small ring on downshifts.  I've been running a 26-39-52 10 speed set up for a few years now with absolutely no issues.  The 26 is a Salsa "9 speed."

Thanks, I had been looking at the Salsa 26T but did not want to pull apart the crank and then find it didn't work well, will add the N gear also. Appreciate the comment.
