why bike?

I can understand Boonebikeguy's attitude. In some places you are a nobody if you are traveling by bicycle. Drivers can be incredibly callous at times. Some places are better for cycling. Some places are worse.

I bike because I love the intimacy of it.  You experience the world with all your senses while riding, and at a pace that allows you to take it in.  I have never finished a ride and felt I wish I hadn't done that.  It's always rewarding.  How many things are like that?

I commute to work everyday via bike (28 miles RT).  I started it just to see if I could and to save money.  Now I look forward to it, and really miss it if i have to drive.  I also love my big gas hogging pickup truck.  Much of my life and the good I do with it would be imposable without it.  You don't have to hate one thing in order to love another.  Remember that girls.

As a conservative, I love the earth because it's an amazing wonder and I don't care if it makes me hip or not.  Do what you can to help keep it sweet, but remember that anger is a pollutant and it smells bad.

Remember, when you drive you probably do some stupid things too, don't let anger ruin your short time here.  It's all good, and when it ain't, it still is, you just aren't paying attention.  If you allow drivers to piss you off, you are only killing your own buzz.  Why do that?  I ride through LA everyday and it seems they are all trying to kill me.  I just laugh it off.  I will not let my time be wasted with anger.

I'm not saying all this in response to anyone here, but just to remind myself and anyone reading that perspective will set you free.

I wanna see smiles on those faces.  Now get out there and pump.  Are you still sittin' there?

I ride for health, ecological, transportation, and fun reasons.  Plus, there's something about the machine that just fascinates me--smooth, quiet, efficient, fun.  The overall economy of the bike thing is inspiring.
May the wind be at your back!

I see myself as a traveller  who uses a bike.  All started after sitting for hours in overcrowded buses way back in the 70's - being 6'2" and crammed into minute seats it was not a pleasant experience. Plus the only things you really got to see was big Towns and Cities.   Still desperate to travel but not very enamoured with backpacking following "gringo trails"  etc decided that the best way for me to see a country was by bicycle.  Never been on one before in any seriousness but decided to ride from UK to Singapore took a year - now had many long bike tours all over the world and just love that freedom and feeling of well being etc.

This is the way I want to do things but never think that that makes me superior to those who choose other modes such as RV's - just as long as people travel and enjoy themselves.  Without cars etc - no roads to ride on.

Just starting to record my trips  www.tonystravels.com

Guys, for last 3 years i live in NYC, and for Manhattan bike - this is the fastest way of transportation, beside it the chipest and the healthiest. Car in manhattan it's a lot of pain in  ;D, cause of parking difficluties nad traffic, subway - too crowded on rush hours... A lot of NY'ers prefer bike, all kind of people do Bike.
