Well the volcano couldn't keep us Brits away for long.  Setting off tomorrow up the Atlantic coast from Jacksonville Fl, just wanted to say hi and thanks for all the information you guys have given me and to ACA who are very helpful.

Enjoy your ride and let us know how you like it. It's always interesting to hear what people from the other side of the pond think of cycling in the US and how it differs from back home.

Great subject line from the Arlo Guthrie song, BTW! ("City of New Orleans")

Hi Guys, yes I was well aware of the song when I posted it, one of my favorites.

What do I think about riding over here, I love it, people are nice and friendly, just passing through the Carolinas and so many people wave as they pass in their pick ups or just sitting on the front porch.

It's possible to find much quieter roads here than in the UK and easier to find a place to pitch your tent by asking permission when motels are not available.  Prefer motels these days!

Did the Southern Tier last year and wow what a diversity of cultures and landscape, loved every (almost) minute of it.

Shame we no longer speak the same language, having real trouble understanding some of the people here in SC.  One conversation went - "Hey where y'all from" "UK" Shouting to her friends "He's riding from the Ukraine" reply "Ain't we at war with them or something"   Its such jolly good fun.

However, I would always encourage you guys to come over and ride in the UK as it is very doable and providing you get the weather good fun.

Cheers Tony

As did Willie Nelson.  You tube it for a great version.
May the wind be at your back!

Dare I admit to having it on my i pod by Willey Nelson! Will I have to stand up in a closed meeting and admit it? ::)
