Great Divide start date question
« on: April 27, 2010, 04:52:52 am »
I'm planning to ride the GDMBR this summer, but I am starting In Anchorage and will ride to Jasper-Banff-Mexico.  Generally, at what dates does the route become unrideable due to snow...I'm thinking some of the high passes in Colorado might be the first to be closed.

What would you say is the latest safe start date from Banff to stay ahead of closures?  I know there are a lot of variables, so rough estimate?  I'll probably be averaging about 50 miles per day on the GDMBR...hopefully more on the road system between Anchorage and Banff.  Right now it looks like the earliest I can leave Anchorage is about July 1.

Well I may have answered my own question.  I re-read a section of Michael McCoy's book and he states the ideal time to start is mid-August, later than I expected.  So I should be good to go.  It is about 2,100 miles from Anchorage to Banff, on paved roads.  I should make it by or before mid-August.
