biking the pacific coast questions - astoria to san fran
« on: August 27, 2010, 02:29:58 pm »
hi! I'm flying out to Portland next saturday for this amazing trip.  I know lots of you have done it & I was wondering about some things that I was having trouble finding out in the book I have bought.  Your advice is greatly appreciated.

1)  Is there computer access along the route -if so, where?  (internet cafes, libraries, campgrounds?...)
2)  What is the one thing you would recommend to us to do/bring or not do/bring?
3)  Any good things you did to try & save $$?

Computer access in internet cafes.  Don't bring too many clothes--we sent stuff home after the first week or so.  You should have rain gear, of course.  Use a mirror, as many of the roads, especially in CA have little or no shoulder.  We brought a small whisperlite stove and cooked breakfast and dinner.  That saves a lot of $.  Also, we camped every night in hiker/biker sites for $5 or less.  Bring quarters for showers, available in all of the campgrounds as of 2005.
May the wind be at your back!
