Accommodations

I will be a solo traveler. Any suggestions for secure accommodations, not far off the beaten path? I was going to purchae the ACA map and am looking for some feedback regarding.

ACA maps are great and will get you some good routes but don't depend on them for up to date or fully comprehensive lists of accommodation.  They will tell you that themselves.

So go to google earth & maps and follow your route for accommodation maybe just off the route.  Even that is often out of date but gives you a start and no's to phone ahead if you are worried.

I like to contact churches and colleges along the way, they have been cooperative, from free to very inexpensive.

Methodists, I have had luck with.

7884Rider, I have one more idea for you. www.couchsurfing.org It is a great organization, worldwide, active in the U.S., might involve some reciprocation, "relatively" safe, and could be adventurous. (you may even get a free meal or two)

Thanks for the info...what does "relatively" safe mean? I like the idea of warmshowers, cause its cyclist to cyclist, you can read their profile and you can extend the favor to other cyclists. This is my biggest concern traveling alone.

7884rider nothing is an absolute and one can never be too safe but I have not heard of any issues with couch surfing.  I believe the people are screened and you would be able get a hot shower and most of the time a meal. Other than the forums, the only other suggestions would be to get a list of bicycle clubs, along your intended route, and contact them and see if any of their members might put you up. I also have had luck at college dorms and Methodist churches. I know their are some bike hostels, that ACO may be able to provide you, through their Yellow Pages. I hope this helps. Bob

couchsurfing is a terrific org to join, as well as warmshowers.  Both are hosting sites, and though it's nice to reciprocate it's not necessary.  I have used CS several times, both as a host and as a guest, and never been disappointed or unsafe.  That's not to say it can't happen, but if you are diligent about reading profiles and checking references/verifications/vouching you should be fine.  Just can't let your guard down and decide to stay with someone who doesn't look "right".   Though I've been a member of warmshowers for years I haven't had the opportunity to use it yet, but will.  On CS you can join cycling/geographic groups to whom you can post a desire for a place to stay.
