Shipping a bike through REI

Hi all -

I'm wondering if anyone knows if REI still ships bikes from one store location to another??  If anyone has or knows of anyone who has - please send some advice. Positive or negative experience?  How long did it take?

check with your local REI.  Mine (Redmond, WA) and the REI at my destination (Pittsburgh, PA) both ship bikes and for the least expensive rate I've ever seen,   $60. each way if you box it yourself.  They will also box it for you for a fee..

I just checked with my REI in Santa Monica and they charge $93 (to ship to Minneapolis REI) insurance, bike box $10, having them box it up $35, and bike re-assembly would all be extra. Hmmm... still a bargain?

Check shipping costs with Fed Ex and UPS and see if it's a bargain.  Of course neither of them will box or reassemble the bike for you.

I found REI to be cheaper than going directly to UPS etc. They have a discount account, I didn't. They will ship to store, residence, etc.

I've had a great experience with REI this summer. I've shipped with them twice this year and experienced no problems.  Disassembly, boxing and shipping ran around 160.00.

Buster, how far did you ship and was that price one shipment or a round trip.  Obviously, it depends on the distance and probably even what cities, but...  If one way and within the continental US it sounds kind of expensive.  If round trip it sounds reasonable.  Using a bike shop and shipping from Reno, NV to Baltimore, MD the whole deal (packing and shipping) was $100 (one way) on my last tour.

I think you are correct about the destination playing a role.  I am pretty sure there are surcharges for out-of-the-way places.  And $160 is high for one way.  Last year I paid about that round trip for boxing and shipping between Philadelphia, PA and Whitefish, MT.

I've usually found that FedEx Ground is the cheapest for large "dimensional weight" items like bikes. Often much cheaper than UPS.
