Nice to see so much info on this topic.  Seems the jury is out and it's 50/50 either way.  Personally I just haven't got the whatever it takes to squash my new tire into a pancake or to twist it all up like spaggetti.  So I guess I'll go with the flow and take along some booting material.  Saves weight.
However, my next somewhat related topic I feel should be started with a separate post just in case it gets as long as this one.  The topic?  One of my worst cycling nightmares - a broken chain in the middle of nowhere!  A spare, to have or have not?

This one wont be so long - take a spare link if your that worried but make sure you have a chain link tool with you.  I'm sure it's happened but i have never met anyone who has had a chain break. (wait for the avalanche of posts saying it has happened to them)

Even without the spare link you can remove the broken link and get going.

Wheels, tyres & chain that is what I spend my money on for touring.
