Just wondering about northwestern California

Just wondering if anyone is familiar with highway 96 in N.W. California?  I was considering this as an option to head back to Bend, and points beyond after a tour of the Oregon coast and into northern CA.  Any other options that would be better?  Thanks for any help.

How were you planning on getting to 96?. Hwy 299 from Arcata to Willow Creek has two lengthy summits and can be pretty narrow but ride-able, especially early in the morning. Hwy 96 from Willow Creek to Hoopa is very narrow and windy, dangerous in fact. After Hoopa it remains narrow but not as windy. 96 is a beautiful road but not sure I would tour on it.
