Crossing the Mississippi at Vicksburg with a cycle:
Don't know how many have been caught out by this but I was, as my mapping s/w indicated I could cycle across and I could n't find any info on the web to confirm or deny it.
There is no walkway across the interstate bridge and you are not allowed to cycle across it. The old bridge is closed to ALL traffic. Try to time your arrival on a normal working day so that people are around. If you come in from the East go to the Bridge Maintenance unit next to the Visitor Center and ask about crossing to the other side. Mo the team leader is extremely helpful and will advise accordingly. If coming from the West try the other office on the western bank (I think its underneath the old bridge entrance gate which will be locked). There may be someone there who can advise or even take you across. If not ring the sheriffs office and they will be able to contact the bridge team or give you their number to ring direct. This is all during normal working hours, mon - fri. Weekends is probably best to ring the sheriffs office 1st - 601-636-2511 or the police number 601-636-1761. Do not under any circumstances try to get round the barriers or use the train tracks. At best you will be returned to where you started, at worst ( and most likely ) you will get arrested. Dept of Homeland Security rules apply! If all this fails try the Visitor Center for advice. Theres not really any parking areas on either side to approach motorists driving pickups or trucks who you can bribe to take you over either. Hope this helps. Andy
