Garmin Edge 705 and long distance routes..
« on: June 26, 2010, 09:04:54 am »
My apologies if this has already been discussed.. two questions.

1. With the Garmin Road Trip (City Navigator NA Map) Software, it won't allow me to create an auto-route and truly avoid highways - even if I tell it so! Could simply be a flaw of the program... I have heard that there are other more bicycle friendly software programs that will avoid highways and hopefully "no shoulder" roads, etc.. that I can then download to my Edge 705?

2. Lastly - is there any way to down load ACA maps to my Edge 705?

Sorry for any redundancies here - I appreciate the help.

Okay  - I figured out the second question. The Road Trip software is very frustrating. I need to map out a bicycle friendly route (about 70 miles)... and Google Maps actually does a great job. I know that Google only allows the destination address to be downloaded to the Garmin. I also tried the GMaptoGPX utility but could not import the file into the Garmin software (not sure whay... I used the GPX extension when I saved it locally) ... I have to believe that someone has come up with an easy way of accomplishing what I am trying to do.

Thanks

Try this site: http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/convert_input

Once you've generated your route on Google Maps, click on the Send button at the top right corner of the map window. Copy the URL and paste it into the "Or provide the URL of a file on the Web" field in gpsvisualizer. That will make a GPX file for you.
