Recovery drinks and Cytomax.
« on: June 03, 2010, 11:46:07 am »
This past winter I cycled fully loaded and camped most of the nights from east coastal Florida to San Diego, California for fifty-five days. At the age of sixty I admit Texas hill country north of Austin, not ACA's route, was beginning to get the best of me.  In a small Texas town a young fellow beeped his horn at me and asked me to pull over. I did in a parking lot. He had a touring / road bike mounted on a carrier on the trunk of his car. He had done some touring. He told me about it. I told him about what I was doing.
He had some Cytomax in a plastic jug which he offered to me. He advised me to try it. It was a few days' supply, and man did it ever make a difference. It was like a shot in the arm with a powerful drug. My energy problems were over except I had to get all the way into El Paso before there was a shop that sold it.

After a long day in the saddle traversing roller coaster roadways and sometimes side and head winds I really needed an infusion of energy. In the mornings starting out I felt somewhat fatigued. I found the way to eliminate that discomfort by slugging down a powdered protein mixed with milk, Powerade, or water immediately as the day's cycling ended.

The Cytomax made a very perceptible and positive difference in the daily cycling regimens. The protein drink made a very big positive difference in the way I felt for cycling the following mornings

Westinghouse, this is interesting. Are you talking about Cytomax Recovery ? They make several different products, this appears to be the one that has protein.

As a runner I have been given Cytomax at aid stations in races and did not like it.  Personally my favorite recovery drink is chocolate milk, but I also drink Gatoraid and Powerade.

One product we tried on a recent tour is Gu Chomps and we loved them.  We also tried Clif Shot Bloks and I did not like them at all.

This was cytomax for endurance and energy during cycling. They have a recovery drink too. I cannot express how much of a difference it made. For me anyway. Cytomax I used has branch-chain amino acids but no whole proteins. Other stuff too.

I started using cytomax about a year ago, and think it makes a difference.  Another product that helped me quite a bit on a hard 2-day mountain/rock climb is "noon".  It's very expensive, though.
May the wind be at your back!

It's probably worth trying, along with some other things.  My gripe with Cytomax is that it kept me from getting thirsty in hot, humid weather until I crashed from lack of fluids.

My favorite drinks on TransAm were V8, orange juice, and chocolate milk.  Oh, and slushies.  Slushies are great, although I never finished a 32 oz.  And fill up with ice and water at every filling station, convenience store, or fast food joint you pass.

Couple of days we were saved by Nuun.  Little tablet in water makes a fizzy drink, about the quickest way to get salt into your body when it's desperately needed and there's not a filling station or convenience store in sight.

It was winter for me so the Cytomax-powerade mixes were sufficient for energy and hydration. In summer over the same route the Cytomax-powerade mixes alone as prescribed for energy would not be nearly enough for hydration. For energy perhaps but never enough for hydration.
