I'm looking for a good bicycle route from Spokane to Missoula. Riding self contained and need places to camp.

try typing "spokane missoula site:crazyguyonabike.com" at google.

It'll give you about a thousand entries.   Many of them the journals of folks who've travelled between these two points one way or the other.  Some will have good things to say about their route choice, others will provide warnings.

Another tool you can use is to go to Google Maps and use the new bicycle routing option to get directions from Spokane to Missoula.
Here is the link to the route I got with Google Maps:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Spokane,+WA&daddr=Missoula,+MT&hl=en&geocode=&mra=ls&dirflg=b&sll=39.789017,-105.46978&sspn=0.062787,0.154324&ie=UTF8&ll=47.215837,-115.708008&spn=1.869263,4.938354&z=8&lci=bike

Yes, but is it any good?  Around here it has some very bizarre ideas about what is optimal for riding.

True. You do need to take the time and go over the proposed route with Street View and Satellite View to verify the route has shoulders and is paved. As you do that, it is easy enough to drag the route to a better road.

I'd take back roads (see the road atlas, lots of choices here) to Lewiston area and then the famous Lochsa river right to Missoula.  That should be a great ride.
May the wind be at your back!

I agree with johnsondasw.  I just met some folks yesterday who took the Lochsa route.  On your way through you can stop at Jerry Johnson or Weir Hot Springs, or get a cabin for relatively inexpensive at Lochsa Lodge which is great!  Stop into Free Cycles where I work here in Missoula if you need a community bike shop or place to just hangout.  The only current places to camp near town are the KOA which I don't really recommend, and the south zone campground in the Rattlesnake Recreation area but it does not have amenities.  Otherwise try the Hutchins Hostel  www.hutchinshostel.com
