Portland to SF, along HWY 101/1, NO camping??
« on: July 07, 2010, 04:44:56 pm »
Hey guys,

For the past couple days I have been reading as many journal blogs on crazyguyonabike.com to prepare for my trip from Portland to San Francisco.  The common thread seems to be everyone camps.

Is that because there are not many hotels/motels along that pacific coast route? We plan on taking the standard route of 101 to 1 down the coast on an aggressive time frame (7 or 8 days) and thusly traveling light (basic day trip supplies only).

Anyone have experience hotel'ing it up down the pacific coast?  Would be looking for towns with places to sleep about every 100-115 miles.

Thanks!

I have not done done that route on a bike, but I have driven it. As far as I remember, every town on 101 and 1 between Portland and San Francisco has at least one hotel/motel/b&b.The whole area is geared towards tourism, so you should have no trouble finding decent indoor accommodations. Being summer and everything, reservations might  be smart if you know where you will be winding up each day.

Thanks,

Hopefully I'll come across a route/journal where people hoteled it and have some experience.  I guess in the mean time, I'll plot routes and check for hotels near those towns.  My guess is that alot of people camp is because after a few days the cost of hotels really adds up.  Just spot checking has some towns at a 150-200$/night.  Ouch!  You can buy a sweet 1 person tent and pay a sag driver daily for that amount.

I've done the same trip and there was no problem finding hotel/motel accommodations. Did a 'credit card' trip a few years ago and food, shelter and sights are plentiful.

I have bicycled twice down the Oregon coast. The reason that everyone camps along the Oregon Coast is that (1) it is SO cheap for hike-biker sites at the Oregon State campgrounds--$5 including shower, (2) the campgrounds are well-maintained and you generally meet other cyclists, and (3) many times you have great ocean views.  However, there are plenty of motels/hotels down the coast. I don't know how full they are during the tourist season, but every town of any size has a motel.  Good luck.

The entire Oregon Coast is public and you can camp on the beach anywhere you want for free. You're never more than a minute from the beach. There are also plenty of formal campgrounds, as well as motels.

I should qualify that a little bit. Be sensible. Don't camp in front of a house, and you're not supposed to camp next to state parks.
