Where do you want to end up in Va.? I have gone from Cape May and taken the Ferry to Lewes, Delaware. I have ridden through Delaware, Md., and part of Va. I have never ridden through the Chesapeake Bay Bridges and Tunnels, I would defer that to someone else, I am not sure it is legal, and certainly not safe. I would probably hitch or arrange a ride to get to Va. Beach and points south. If I do it again I would go west to Annapolis, Md. and then on to Baltimore and Washington D.C.

Regarding the Chesapeake Bay bridge:

Scroll down to Crossing the Waters as bikes are prohibited from riding across the bridge but you can pay for a shuttle...

Yes, if you plan to cross the bay into Virginia Beach, you'll need to get a ride across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. You can try to arrange a shuttle from the bridge folks, or just try to score a ride with someone driving across. Just before the bridge toll booths on the north (DelMarVa) side there is a big rest area with bathrooms that many people stop at. I'd be surprised if you couldn't approach someone with a pickup or van and ask them for a ride across. Offer to pay their toll (~$12 one way) and they'll likely be very receptive.

an alternative is pennsylvania bicycle route S west to york,pa then the york heritage bicycle trail to baltimore ,md
or take pa bicycle route s to pittsburgh and ride the alleghany bicycle trail to washington,dc

Crossing the Chesapeake Bridge Bridge/Tunnel is no problem at all. Just phone them (757. 331.2960) about a half hour or hour before arriving and ask for a ride across. You will be driven across in a maintenance pickup with your bike in the back. It's free but you have to pay the toll. If you don't phone ahead they will give you the ride but will grumble and give you the evil eye for not phoning ahead.

Heading south, stop at "Stingrays" restaurant (looks like a dive, with a gift shop and gas pumps in back, but is really good: http://www.cape-center.com/), order one of their killer milkshakes, place the call to the Bridge, finish your milkshake, and ride the rest of the distance (5-6 miles) to the bridge to meet your ride :-)

There's also a nice state park not too far from the northern entrance to the bridge: Kiptopeke State Park
