New York City to New Haven Bike Route

Hello!  My best friend and I are planning to bike to New Haven and pick up the Farmington Canal Trail and continue on to Northampton.  Does anyone have any trips for routes getting from NYC to New Haven?

get a Metro North Bike pass and take the train to New Haven.
