Green Mountains Loop Map #8: Middlebury Gap Construction

8.4 mi. of SR 125 from the summit of Middlebury Gap to E. Middlebury is under construction. Expect short delays at one-way traffic points. From the summit to Breadloaf (2.7 mi.) is unpaved. From Ripton to E. Middlebury (2.7 mi.) is unpaved. Consider Brandon Gap as an alternate.

Leaving for Cycle Vermont on Saturday.  I saw this info. posted on Bike Forums.  I let Sean know.  According to the poster, the east side is new pavement and is smooth as a you know what.

The east side of Brandon doesn't look too steep, but it is long.

Just did Middlebury Gap on Thursday.  The west side was rideable (we were on 23c tires) but milled much of the way.  Just take your time.  The start of the decent is crushed lime rock.  If it has been watered it will coat you body and bike.  Saw new blacktop being put down.  Looks like they could be finished this week, maybe next.  The west slope is fine.

In other news, VT 113 into Chelsea on the East Alternative was recently paved.  Striping hadn't even been put down as of Wednesday.  It is almost like riding in a velodrome.  Sweet!

Thanks for the update. Looks like much of the soft gravel is now paved. For anyone planning this section, here is a web site where we can get the state's word, probably behind the times: http://511.vermont.gov/main.jsf. Click the construction sign just east of Middlebury.

I posted maps and riding directions for the Brandon Gap alternate on MapMyRide:
 Westbound (CW): http://www.mapmyride.com/route/detail/21868306/
 Eastbound (CCW): http://www.mapmyride.com/route/detail/21869340/

The base coat of asphalt is now complete. No more gravel, no more dust. Wear coat paving is under way, to be followed by striping and sloping of shoulders. Vermont Highway estimates completion the second or third week of October. For now, expect only short delays at one-way spots near the paving equipment.
