suggested route from Bedford to Portsmouth
« on: February 19, 2011, 07:59:36 pm »
Ok, so a group of us (Canadian women road bikers) are cycling from Boston to Portland Maine, stopping halfway at Portsmouth. We are probably taking the Minuteman Trail from Cambridge to Bedford to get out of town. Any suggested routes from there to Portsmouth, preferably scenic and not too busy?

The best route heading north for Boston swings out into the state forest areas where North Shore Cyclists have their rides.   Here's the Ipswich to Boston ride:  http://cyclingnewengland.blogspot.com/2011/01/ipswich-to-boston.html  and you can find rides in New England  by town at http://ridemap.info.

I am really not sure that there is a good route. However, here are a couple of alternatives.

1. Chech out the ACA Atlantic route. It has a spur into Boston not on the trail.

2. Take the commuter rail from Boston North Station to Newburyport and follow this scenic route to Portsmouth: http://www.gpsies.com/map.do?fileId=bhaipgeymzbgoxif. I took this route on a tour of all six New England states & Montréal.

Once in Portsmouth, I highly recommend these two food options:

- Flatbread Co for organic pizza, 138 Congress St, 603-436-7888

- Me and Ollie’s Café for fresh bread, sandwiches, and soup, 10 Pleasant St, 603-436-7777
