Cycling Trip
« on: October 29, 2010, 11:11:31 pm »
The trail i was meant to take would take way to long and i would be to lonely for to long. So i have decided to go from the state of Utah north to Anchorage Alaska. And i am wondering what to expect from the trip up north like weather, wild animals ? I am not leaving until 2012 and somewhere around may-june area. To get some of the warm weather while i am headed far north. I am guessing it should be pretty nice during this time. I am also wondering about the trail. Is there an actual adventure cycling map hat goes from utah to alaska ?

Any help or advice will be great.

thank you

Jake

On this site, (click on www.adventurecycling.org near the top right), click in the left column on routes and maps.  Then on near the top of the right column, click on ACA route network.   That will tell you what areas are covered by Adventure Cycling maps.

That said, you may well be able to patch something together up to a little beyond the Canadian border using ACA maps.  Beyond that, I would suggest going to crazyguyonabike.com and searching for Alaska.  Also the Dempster Highway takes you part way, and journals of Dempster Highway trips will likely be relevant in terms of setting expectations.

Hi Jake -

I rode from fairbanks, AK to Vancouver, BC in 2005.  Started on Memorial Day and finished in Vancouver on July 4th.  Assuming you are not taking the ferry from Seattle to Alaska, there are essentially two roads through British Columbia to meet up with the Al-Can Highway on the northern side of British Columbia.  Both roads are harder riding going north.  Weather in June was nice enough, but you could encounter below freezing weather.  Inside of my tent was in the upper 20s a couple of nights. Mosquitoes and black fllies are abnoxiously bad in places.

The absolute best resource for Canada and Alaska for what you are doing is a book called The Milepost (in most libraries).  It literally details every mile of roads through British Columbia and north through Alaska.  It includes elevations and places to stay, etc..

I will gladly help with other details as you go along your planning process.
