Bike Tour Birth Control

Hi all,

My boyfriend and I are starting a Pan American trip in June. I can't seem to find any good info anywhere on what to do about birth control while on the ride. I think the Nuva Ring will best method, but any other ideas are welcome. I need to talk to my doc, but wondering if anyone knows if the doc will release multiple months of the prescription at a time.

On a serious note, my girlfriend used Nuva Ring on a trip we did, and it messed with her pretty badly. We ran with condoms.

Mail order prescriptions tend to be 90 day.  May not be enough, but if you go the mail order route you should be able to get a refill mailed somewhere (possibly through an intermediate person) to catch up with you.  Assuming you have enough lead time.

I know you're looking for legitimate advice but I had my vasectomy decades ago so this is a topic I know only one thing about: do not ride recumbents on your tour. You will end your days differently than on conventional bikes, without pain and feeling like a million bucks. Unless you solve your conception control question, the energy reserve and afterglow of getting into camp on a 'bent would have to go somewhere!

My wife has had a Mirena implanted and it has been wonderful.  Things have really mellowed out and cycles are very slight.  I know it's expensive but the results have been really good and I can recommend this method because of the complete lack of "supplies" or maintenance.  Some insurance covers the cost but you have to check with your carrier.  This little device has really change our lives.
