Camp Shoe ideas????
« on: January 06, 2011, 06:38:27 pm »
I've got all my gear figured out and strealined except for camp/off the bike shoes.
Right now I've got running shoes (racing flats), but boy do they take up a lot of room.
We definitely walk around when not on the bike, so flip flops won't do.
Size/volume is more important than weight.
Any ideas anyone????

I swear by my Teva sandals, although they're fairly old.  I think Chacos and Keen make similar sandals now.  Things to look for include ankle strap(s) and no thong between the toes.  That lets you wear them with socks if it's chilly, although I wanted something more substantial wading through slush at the top of Logan Pass.

Pack flat; weigh only a few ounces; protect your feet from rocks; wearable in the shower, although the straps may stay damp for a few days.  I wrapped them in a plastic bag to keep the dirt and sand from getting everywhere in the pannier.

Keen Newports.  A little heavy, but very comfortable and I can wear then all day hiking, going in water, everthing.
May the wind be at your back!

+1.  I hang them on outside of panniers so no room in panniers required.

Get something that can double as shower shoes/sandals to protect your feet from plantar warts and athlete's foot.  Use mountain pedals with shoes with recessed cleats suitable for hiking and going in stores.

TEVA sandals all the way. Ive been using them since the 80s. Ive tried KEEN, they are ok but not as good overall.

+1 for Crocs, light, don't rub between toes, ideal for in the shower, look acceptable for wearing away from bike, pretty tough and you can fix Mickey Mouse tags to them well OK maybe not a plus  :D

Just starting to record my trips  www.tonystravels.com

Bulk isn't a problem just hang them on the back somewhere with a carabiner.

A few key requirements for me are:
1. Must be easy to just step into when leaving the tent.
2. Must double as shower shoes.
3. Must be OK for walking a few miles.
4. Must be light weight.

Crocs meet all of those requirements nicely, but If I will be hiking a lot I might consider adding a pair of trail running shoes.  Most trips I do not find that necessary, since my hikes while on tour are typically just short walks.  That said when we spend a week in Yosemite Valley I bought a pair of light trail running shoes.

BTW, I own a pair of Vibram Five Fingers and enjoy running in them, but they do not meet requirement #1 since they are a pain to put on.  Also they are not optimum as shower shoes (item #2).  They are fine for hiking though.

Jinga dancing shoes do it for me,

Light & fold flat but just enough to walk over wet or gritty sufaces, mind the sharp pebbles though!
Handy for a Salsa down Mexico way too.

crocs=light weight, can wear with socks, step in and out, no problem in water. cons-crappy to ride in, not much of an urban fashion statement. good luck-shoe choices can be a b***h. don't hesitate to send home miscreants and start again.

Amen to the Keen Newports. I have two pair of the Newport H2 (same as the Newport but made for use in water) and love them ... feel good, keep your feet cool, durable. You could buy the Newport H2 and use them as shower shoes - they dry pretty quickly. Easy to put on and are good for long walks. They're not the lightest but they'll offer more protection for your tootsies that regular sandals or flip-flops.

Agree w/ Staehpj's key requirements.
My Tevas satisfy all but #1 for me.
Just can't feel the love for crocs ... just no style!   ;D
