I am planning on riding the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route (GDMBR) from near the Canadian border to Steamboat Springs, Colorado.
Thirty to 35 days of bliss.

Hey Steven,

Do you have an idea of a route? I am planning to cycle across America on the Transamerica, also starting in July, and also starting in South Carolina...probably starting in Charleston (have a friend there to visit) and might cycle up to the official start point in Virginia.

I am Australian and have never been cycle-touring before...going to buy a bike over there and get some gear from cyclocamping.com

Any chance you know of a good bike shop in Charleston or elsewhere in S.C. where I could get set up? From what I have found on the internet, the 'Charleston Bicycle Company' may have the best range of bikes???

Thanks,
Mark

Hey Mark,

I don't know a single thing about SC yet. I am moving there from Minnesota at the end of this month temporarily until my trip June/July. So I don't have any wealth of knowledge to give you as of yet. Like I said, I will be moving to Fort Mill, SC at the end of this month and plan on being there for the next 2-3 months until the beginning of the trip. During those 2-3 months I will be biking around and training for the trip but it will all be new to me. I plan on leaving from Myrtle Beach and what I did was simply to plan 50-60 mile routes from town to town, where I will be meeting up with the TA in Kentucky and going from there. I plan on meeting up with the TA right above the Mammoth Cave National Park.

Sorry I don't have much info for you but I will soon. Maybe we'll meet up on our trip. My approach to the trip is to enjoy the space in between one coast and the other and less focused on getting to the other end.

Keep in touch!
Stevenp

No worries. Maybe once you have been in S.C. for a while you will have suggestions of a bike shop to visit?

Sounds like you have a great plan. I am still unsure whether I will ride up into Virginia or do something similar to you and just join the TA along the way. I am a little more focused on getting to the other end though: I have missed the last two Australian summers and so I really want to spend some time on some nice beaches on the west coast...and I am only allowed in the country for three months.

All the best...and yeah maybe we will cross paths!

I'm starting in Cape town in November and heading north, any chance I'll bump into anybody?

 ;D :-\
Probably riding across my home state of New Jersey from High Point to Cap May or Cap May to High Point haven't made up my mind yet.
Anyone want to go with me? I would love the company. :)

In the planning stages for the Sierra Cascades route beginning in August.  Whole enchilada.  Hopefully some small tours around Arizona in between now and then.
