Low Rider Front Racks for Trek 520??
« on: March 20, 2011, 01:10:33 pm »
I have a 2008 Trek 520 that I want to use for loaded touring.  I'm having trouble finding a front rack that will work with the fork and be somewhat level!  I have eyelets on the front hub that are currently in use for my front fender hardware, but I'd be willing to sacrifice the fender if I could find low rider racks that would work on this bike.  Any one run into this problem??  Any solutions??

I have a 2009 and the Tubus Tara works fine. The fork on the 2008 is the same as the one on the 2009.

Thanks, I'll check that one out, and if anyone else has additional suggestions - please post!

Yep, that one works great on my '05 520, very stable/solid.

Tubus Tara.  I had the Blackburn CL1 Custom LowRider before.  Both were level.

You don't have to sacrifice fenders. Mount the rack (I got mine from the ACA store) on the same lugs as the fender, just get longer bolts to go through both rack and fender mount. I put the rack on the outside of the fender mounts and it works fine. This leaves the slight annoyance of having to change back to shorter bolts when you take off the rack otherwise the long bolts will interfere with the wheel. Make sure the rails you mount the panniers on are level or down slightly to the front. I didn't and my Ortlieb Front Roller pannier clips wore the paint off my forks (I have found some fingernail polish that's a fairly close match)

Surley makes a rack that has a flat top but can be used as a low rider also and it has eyelets for your fenders.

Note the Tubus Tara has an additional set of eyelets.  If you don't want to mount the rack outside the fender, you can mount the rack to the eyelets next to the dropouts, then mount the fender to the rack.
