TransAmerica Trail Section #9 - 2011

We just received notice from the Missouri DOT that they will be replacing some bridges on the TransAmerica Trail Route this spring and summer. They are:

TA #9 - Map 101, SR 126, between SR J and US 71, beginning 3/9/11 for 56 days
TA #9 - Map 102, SR K, between SR 39 and SR M, beginning 8/1/11 for 53 days
TA #9 - Map 103, SR BB between SR 123 and SR Z, beginning 7/19/11 for 44 days
TA #9 - Map 105, SR 38, between SR F and SR 5, beginning 4/23/11 for 44 days

You can see their recommended detours of these sites by visiting the Safe and Sound website. Select the bridge you want more information about and it's location and detour will appear in the lower right.

The Safe and Sound map is a well done resource showing not only locations but also approximate start days and project durations. I'd use it to get the answers you're looking for.

There is another bridge closed on MO 126 as well.

 Map 100, on 126 between 43 and M.

I wasn't expecting it so rode through the closure to see if I could get across anyway, but no.

Detour I took was to continue through the Road Closed barriers at 43 for 3.2 kilometres (2 mi) on 126 then north on UNSEALED SW 120th Lane, at 1.6 km (1 mi) west onto UNSEALED SW 60th Rd, which brought me out on 126 just east of the junction with M. The road is loose gravel over clay, ok for touring bikes with wider tyres in the dry. It would be doable but a struggle with narrow road tyres. It was dry when I did it. Also a quiet Sunday afternoon, might be unpleasant if a lot of traffic.

Eastbound riders would continue through the Road Closure near M and turn north on dirt road signed as SW 137th Lane, this becomes SW 60th Rd.

I guess the alternative would involve US160, perhaps from Golden City as the other bridge is out on MO126 near US71 as well.

There is another bridge out on MO38 between Hartville and Marshfield.

Map 105, on 38 at Osage Fork Gasconade River between JJ and P.

This is in addition to the one closer between F and Hartville, and the one on F between 38 and V which would otherwise have been a logical detour.

The route I took from Hartville was worked out by Dutch Mark who's a couple of days ahead of me.

From Hartville south on 5, west on V, south on F/V, west on V, north on C, weston P to rejoin 38.

It's a nice ride, adds about 2 or 3 miles. I spoke to another rider latter who took the signed detour north on 5 outof Hartville and he said it was very hilly.

We ignored the detour signs and easily walked our bikes past all the bridge construction happening along the TransAm route Section 9. They have a temporary bridge at all of the crossings that the workers use.  They happily waved us on.  We walked past the bridge reconstruction between Walnut Grove and Fair Grove on 8/1/2011 and the two bridges being reconstructed between Marshfield and Hartville on 8/2/2011.  We have not seen any other detours so far from Girrard to Farmington.

my wife and i just rode that same stretch.  we met up w/ one of the construction supervisors in Marshfield during a break.  he said that as long as there's no heavy equipment moving near the crossing, or cranes lifting materials that cyclists may (carefully) cross.  the detour for the bridge closest to hartville is over 20 miles.  there are currently three bridges out between hartville and walnut grove.
