I am an old hand at touring and will be retired this June.2012 is the big number for me.I plan to do the Southern tier route west to east on my rans velocity 2.I am looking for help in which month to start from San Diego.I would like to start in late Febuary but i am a little worried about crossing the Sierra MT. at that time.I might add that 40 degree or higher i do not mine riding in. Anybody have any thoughts,on when a safe early time would be ???

I left end of March 2005 and ran into subfreezing cold and a little snow at Gila Hot Springs.  If you can get through NM you're good to go.  Don't worry about the Cleveland National Forrest in San Diego County.  There's little chance of snow after mid-March.

We just got some snow the past few days in the San Diego back country.  Not too much, but enough to require chains on some roads.
