combining Garmin maps

I have a Legend unit and I have paid Garmin to download the Rails-to-Trails maps for the Eastern half of the United States.  I have not downloaded them yet since I am waiting for my SD cards to arrive from Amazon but I was wondering; these two different maps cover the Eastern half of the US, essentially from the Mississippi to the East coast.  Is there a way to combine the files into one map so I can plan an extended route across both sections using one SD card and not have to worry about carrying a second card and all the technical stuff about splitting the route?  Or am I just being weird?

This can probably be done. https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?t=11216 is an overview, and you can find more by browsing around that forum.

Combining maps supplied on DVD is easy on a PC or Mac, but Garmin seems to offer these RTC maps only by download.

If you figure this out, would you write back with some step-by-step instructions, please? These maps are bound to be popular with this crowd.

After reading the discussion here (http://gpstracklog.com/2010/11/garmin-rails-to-trails-maps.html) I'd be extremely wary of using the Garmin rails-to-trails product.

Wish I would have had this information before forking over $20 to Garmin.  That's a waste.  I guess I'll be stuck using a combination method for creating my own routes in MapSource after plotting on alternate tool or importing Trail Link map.  I am amazed how inept Garmin is at providing it's customers with usable tools that would really amp it's products through avid customer support.  That would seem like such a no brainer for marketing nerds to figure out.  Oh well...I have my Legend, now I have to figure out how to exercise my invested dollars.
