How waterproof is your piece of uncoated nylon?
I don't think the answer to that question matters. A waterproof footprint won't help keep water out of your tent, and may in fact make it worse (by holding a puddle of water under your tent).

No, the polyester screen material is not rough like metal screening. No abrasion from it.  It's never been dirtier than any other ground cloth and because it is much more permeable it doesn't hold water.

Most tents, especially light weight, ultra weight ones have footprints which can be purchased.

Outdoor Products tarp

Walmart carries a 5x7 coated nylon tarp with grommets made by Outdoor Products. About $10 I think. It might be a bit heavy for bike touring, but it's quite solid and would make a good emergency shelter if you get rained on mid-day---you could use the grommets to tie it to the bike and sit under it. It appears very durable.
