Route maps for cross Canada ride?
« on: May 28, 2011, 12:03:01 pm »
Greetings, A newbie here. I'm planning to set out from Victoria and ride across Canada starting in June. I haven't been able to find any cycling maps like the one offered by the ACA of US routes. Do such maps exist in Canada?
Thanks!

Nothing that good, but a forum search turns up this topic.

Wuwie greetings, there is a book by Joe Kurmaskie called "Blood, Seat & Gears: A Rowdy Family Bike Adventure Across Canada on 7 Wheels." It is about a family who rode across Canada. I have it in my Kindle que and I read the sample material. Although first published in 2009, it may give you some information on routes. So far it is entertaining. You can purchase a hard copy from ACO online store.

Thanks for the tip tourista829. I've ordered the book "Canada by Bicycle" by Steve Langston which should be helpful as well.

Also check out the Trans-Canada Trail. http://www.tctrail.ca/home.php -- there is a merchandise page with guidebooks

I've got a copy of a book written by Elliot Katz about bike touring in Canada. It has various different tours in each province, and a "Cross-Province" route that can be linked up to create a cross-Canada route. The two drawbacks is the routings are nowhere near as detailed as either the Kirkendall/Spring Pacific Coast book or the ACA maps, so it won't tell you where services are. And it was published in the early '90s, not exactly up to date. Still, it's a start, so with some Google research one could craft a route. Check Amazon as it sometimes pops up there.

I completed the ride by mainly staying on the Trans-Canada highway except for going north to Jasper on highway 5. Some parts of the Trans Canada in Ontario were pretty bad with little or no shoulder, especially between Mattawa and Pembroke. There is quite a bit of construction going on in that area and things should improve in the next couple of years.
