So I just got this nifty new setup, and I had a quick question:
If I am solo touring and just cooking for myself and I stay on the ACA routes how much fuel should I keep on my person at a given time? Really, I am shopping for fuel bottles and I want to know what size and/or how many to buy. I dont' want gallons of fuel on me, and I don't want to run out in a bad spot. I know someone has a quick easy answer to this.

Yes, Heet is the ticket, and it comes in smaller quantities than you might have to buy if you insisted on using denatured alcohol only. Smaller quantities mean less weight, and while one item may not mean much in terms of weight, if you practice the weight saving principle with every item, you could find yourself grinding over some pass with 15 pounds less on your bike than you would have had if you had not. Another thing. Being out of fuel is not that much of a problem. Many people bicycle tour transcontinentally without using any stove at all. Just remember to be prepared for the road ahead.

I tour with one other person, and we carry a one-litre bottle of denatured alcohol. We pour it into the plastic trangia fuel bottle. Most hardware stores sell one-litre containers of it. It takes about a week or so to go through the fuel. I've never had a problem finding fuel in the US or Canada, which is what makes the trangia totally awesome!

I've been in the middle of nowhere and unable to find restaurants or grocery stores, so I always make sure to have some fuel and food with me.

another question: heet comes in a few varieties: yellow bottle and red bottle (iso-heet), does it matter which?

The Trangias are highly regarded in many circles including ultrlight backpackers; the device is easily researched. Mine used about 1 fluid ounce of alcohol to boil a cup of water at 8,000 feet. If I recall correctly, the capacity of the reservoir is about 1 ounce.

Those are the two factors you want to determine, burn rate and work accomplished. You may need to improve the performance. I arranged my camping gear to act as a windscreen but that was inconvenient so I built one. ONce you kow how it performs in different conditions, you can anticipate how much fuel you will want to carry and, if you were traveling in wilderness, how much you want as a safety reserve.

After your trip, please consider coming back to this thread or starting a new one and tell us how your Trangia performed.

One kind of Heet is made with isopropyl alcohol, and that is the kind to NOT use.
Another Heet is made with methyl alcohol, and that is the kind you must use.
