Shipping Bikes to Alaska

Anyone have any experience shipping a bike to Alaska using UPS, FedEx, Sports Express or any other carrier?

I’ve shipped bikes numerous times in the lower 48 using FedEx Ground for not much more than $120 but when I checked shipping prices to Anchorage I was getting quotes around $600 round trip.  We’re flying on Delta and they want $200 for each leg so the total bill to send both my wife’s and my bikes would be $800.  That’s better than the $1200 FedEx/UPS wants but I have to think there’s a cheaper alternative.  Anyone have any experience or suggestions?

I don't know what your time constraints are or where you are starting from but if I were travelling with a sweetie I would seriously consider the coastal ferries. Everyone who has gone on them says they make for the trip of a lifetime.
