TransAmerica Section 11, map 129 - 2011
« on: June 06, 2011, 03:02:59 pm »
We have just been alerted to a closure due to bridge repair on SR 30, south of Vincent. This will likely continue until July 31. There is a detour posted on SR 846 and 11 to return to the route in Booneville. It is approximately 16 miles.

You can follow Kentucky DOT progress at:

Jennifer,
I am new to these forums, so if this is not the proper place to direct this question, please let me know how to do so.

I am riding the TransAm now, westbound, and noted this detour.  I am using the BC-1542-07 version of the Section 11 map, and was surprised to see that this detour is not on the route that my map shows.  In comparing with another rider, it looks like the route was changed at Vincent, KY between 2007 and 2009, and now runs south and uses US 421 instead of SR 399, SR 587, CR 1209, etc.

How can I find out:
a) why the route changed?
b) how I would be made aware of such a fundamental change (I don't see it in the addenda for either the 07 or 09 map)?
c) would the old route be a viable way to go now to get around this detour?

Again, if there is a better place to be asking these questions, please let me know, but they got generated by your helpful detour report here.

Thank you!

a) The best way to find out why a route changed is to ask us. Doing so via the Forums is fine. You can also send an email to Routes & Mapping via the Ask Questions link our Contact Us page: http://www.adventurecycling.org/ac/contact.cfm

b) You will generally only find service updates and route changes due to permanent road closures or new construction requiring new narrative and mileages or safety issues on the addenda. There are times, such as this one, where new routing is suggested and incorporated because it enhances the overall character of the route, shortens distances, and/or has improved road conditions.

c) In this case, the old route is a viable option as a detour.

I hope this helps.
