I did the TransAM route solo a few years back and found fire departments were always willing to allow me to stay.  Most were volunteer so you have to find the local fire chief.  Never once was turn down.  Must have stayed free in fire departments 65% of the tour.  Most had showers and some came with dinner and breakfast.
