Maps for Backpacking

I am active in sports and in being outside a lot. First i was only about cycling but now it seems i am only about backpacking and walking everywhere.

My question is and i probably should check other sites also but is there such a thing as maps to go backpacking cross country ? I have seen it done before a year ago when i was on my first bicycle trip cross country. He was traveling from Yorktown Virginia and going to San Fransisco California. I have know idea how long it took him but as he was traveling i heard great things about him how far and how long he could travel in one day.

If anyone has any sites and any friends that know anything would be great.
