Those surfboards aren't just background noise.  Click PREV and NEXT to see the custom bikes that will be carrying all that gear.  Note the tires!

Why would one person need three bicycle locks and four pairs of shoes?

Well look at it this way, if he runs low on funds, he can always set up a flea market and sell some of his stuff. Then might have enough money to ship the rest of his stuff home. ???

This is the first time I have ever seen such bikes and tires. It looks like they're loaded for bear. I would imagine they can go just about anywhere with those bikes.

Although, he's on a custom Bilenky ride, Surly and Salsa both offer bikes with that tire setup. They're very common in northern regions, where it snows a decent amount. They work exceptionally well on sand, too.

i dont think he got too far. on the bright side if you make it more than 5 miles a day with that kind of gear you know you have a sturdy bike and you must be in good shape. i think the most i ever packed in my big bag (2 changes of clothes, and some other small things i didnt want in my pocket) was almost unbearable after the first 20 miles and reconsidered and thought about ditching half of it. but i guess the 3 pairs of sun glasses was nessesary.
