Trekkingbike for crossing USA

Dear friends in biking. A friend of mine wants to do NYC - SFO by bike in Aug. - Sept. 2011. Now he wants to by a bike in NYC and sell it in SFO before flying back. Who has a good suggestion, where to by a good but reasonably priced Trekkingbike in NYC? He will stay in a hotel in the chinatown area and I have selected the following suggestions via internet: Bycicle Habitat Lafayette Street, Franks Bike Shop Grand Street, Gothams Bikes W Broadway. Any comments and suggestions are most welcome. If some bikers friends from NYC could lend a helping hand to Thomas to buy a bike in NYC on 03/04AUG2011 it would be very helpful. Thomas is an ultra runner and triathlete, he is always very optimistic and he does the whole thing to cross SFO Golden Gate bridge as his father did some 50 years ago. What a devoted son. sorry,  can't help you with NYC,  but I can get the conversation started by highly recommending these guys in nearby New Jersey.
It would be a 30 minute train ride,  or they might even have a suggestion for you.
