Touring with different types of bikes
« on: July 17, 2011, 07:00:13 pm »
My friend and I are going to ride the Northern Tier next June.  He has a Novara Randonee, and I have  Longbikes Slipstream recumbment.  Do you think our pace will be about the same, or should we try to ride the same type of bike?  We are going to ride unsupported, and are in about the same condition (a couple of halfway fit 57 year old guys).

You should take a couple of loaded day rides with some hills to see if you have the same pace.  I've seen recumbents go faster and slower.  It just depends on the rider.

Given identical riders and bike weights (that never happens but bear with me) the recumbant will be slower on climbs, faster on downhills and faster against a headwind.
