Recumbent! always wanted to try one. Little scared with all the monster trucks in SoCal - feels like they will roll over anything...How is the climbing in these?

The wonders of google, the couple of female cycling friends I have say they're handy in a real emergency but generally pretty aweful to use.......

Gearing up for a cycling tour, and in need of a uber comfortable bicycle seat. Something that would make my derriere feel like riding on a cloud...

There is really only one kind of bicyle seat that will give your butt a cloud like feeling, and that is the kind that is found on a recumbent bicycle. My wife rode across the U.S. twice on a Cannondale touring bike before she met me and swore she'd never ride again because of the butt/wrist pain. She agreed to ride coast to coast with me and our son only because I bought her a recumbent. The fact that she would sit on her 'bent to eat lunch sometimes instead of getting off her bike demonstrates how comfortable they are.

LexieCall, we wish you a good trip. There is no substitue for getting your bottom road hard. I rode a Brooks Professional Saddle for a many years. A friend of mine, who also rode the same saddle, suggested the Sela Italia. He was so enthusiastic about it. He said he consistantly rode plus 100 miles a day and he forgot the saddle was there. I voiced concerned about the saddle being too soft after awhile. He assured me, for him, that was not the case, so I purchased one. So far so good.

We also experimented with the Terry Liberator X & Y. Not for us, too hard. Their free 30 day money back started from the day they shipped the saddle to us, to the day it was received back by them, about 2 & 1/2 weeks of riding time. Our bottoms were in shape, maybe if we had had more time, we may have gotten use to it. The Sella was good, out of the box. Proper fiting bicycle doesn't hurt either. Punn intended. Of course, you could spend a bundle and purchase a recumbent. Ride safely.

Asking some one else which saddle (or bike style) would be best is like sending someone else out to try on shoes for you and tell you which will fit you best; it won't work. 

That said, I have had great luck with by trusty old Brooks B17, but I have rather wide sit bones for a male. I have tried gel saddles, and "soft torture" would be the best description, As far as the plastic axes that the racers use, well, let's just say I can see why they stand up so much!

But again, the best thing you can do is ride various models and take notes as to what works best for you.

Yar, trying to sell the idea of recumbents is difficult. Do they climb? Yes, what's your hurry? Is it visible? Yes. I am almost always forced into a defensive position and I hate that so I have arrived at a single argument: "Here, sit on my bike. You know you want to."

My Easy Racers Tour Easy has 37,000 ultra-comfy miles on her and I paid about US$2,000 for her in 2002. Quality recumbents and trikes, like any quality bicycle, are priced by frame material, country of origin and optional component specs. There is a small penalty for the fact that 'bents are not produced in huge volumes but it is insignificant compared to the immeasurable pleasure of traveling pain-free in a heads-up position. We call it High-def Touring.
