Camping after Labor Day - Northern Tier

Hi all,

My wife and I are headed to Maine from Chicago starting Sept 2nd. I have read that camping "might" be tougher this time of year? Do I really need to worry and call in advance?

In these times of fiscal austerity, particularly in the budgets of state and federal park and land management agencies, it is a good idea to check the web and call or e-mail ahead to see if the facilities you want to camp at are open after Labor Day.

On the plus side, the worst of the biting bugs and extreme heat should be over by then, making for a much more enjoyable trip.

I would especially check any state facilities in the Adirondaks.

If it fits with your schedule, check out the cyclist facility in Monroeville, IN.  Nice place.

It was pretty chilly at night in August. The owner lest us sleep upstairs in the barn.

Other suggestions are the Raibow Hostel in Niagara Falls, ON:

and this place just east of Dunkirk, NY, which has a nice view of the lake:
