Arkel Panniers

Has anyone used Arkel XM-28 panniers for touring? What did people like and dislike?

I'm thinking of getting them for a Mk1 Salsa Fargo with an Old Man Mountain Sherpa rear rack. Ideally, I'll use these for lots of S240s and a few two day trips.

Way overbuilt for light duty touring so, at $200/pair, you're investing more than you need to. Arkel makes great stuff and these will last as you graduate into more ambitious self-contained excursions.

The economics of good equipment are sound but only if you are committed. Good equipment is purchased only once, cheap gear you buy it at least twice.

Look at the Arkel Utility Baskets. (under urban / communting)  I've been touring with them for a decade.  Solid, durable, excellent construction, and a pound lighter than the XM28 panniers.  The cargo size is virtually identical to the XM28 panniers.  They have no pockets which is why they are lighter.  Just one very large cargo compartment.

Bought the wife a pair two years ago and have never had any trouble with them at all.  Here's the website location for the Arkel Utility Baskets.  Check into them and happy riding.
