Cycling across Australia to highlight the dangers of Heartburn

Crossing Australia to highlight Heartburn awareness

On 9 September I will be leaving Perth Au to cycle across Australia to Sydney (or as far as I can in 2 months) this has always been one of my ambitions but also since being diagnosed with Barrett's Disease I want to highlight the dangers of letting heartburn continue too long without getting it checked out. I disguised the symptoms by taking various over the counter well advertised products.  So if you have persistent heartburn or acid reflux please get it checked out.  More info http://www.barrettscampaign.org.uk/
And anyone wanting to follow my progress be pleased to have you along.

Always good to know your body and if you sense something isnt right, have it checked out regardless of what it is. Ive fought that reflux thing for a long time and it takes some time to rule out the exact cause because the symptoms cross over to other problems such as galbladder, gastritis, ulcer. I believe the main thing is go to the best physician and pathologist you can find because my pathologist said it was Barrets and my Doc who did the EGD disagreed. have a great ride and stay healthy.

I had to read the body of your posting to realize you were indeed publicizing a potentially serious condition.  At first reading the thread title seemed like a joke or parody of  ther "disease rides".

Dave thanks for that I hope that others arn't put off thinking it's a joke. Not too sure how to re phrase it. And Hondo - the main thing is that someone is monitoring your/my situation to ensure that things don't turn nasty as apparently if it does there is no change in the symptoms.

I read the link. I knew someone with that disorder. She was having a bad time of it.

I have often thought about cycling the perimeter of Australia. I doubt I ever will. The roundtrip fare is just too much. Since you will be going there you can see this poem/song---And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda. Get it on youtube and select Liam Clancy. It is a ghastly haunting account of Australian survivors of the battle of Suvla Bay at Gallipoli.

I read a story of a man who did a perimeter tour there. I think it might be a good idea to have water stored at points along the southern part of the country. I don't remember the name of the book anymore. I believe the perimeter can be cycled in 6 to 8 months.

Hi  I'm only doing the southern part of Australia and yes water is my main concern.  Will look out for the poem.

Thanks
