Transcendence In Sports
« on: October 03, 2011, 09:07:41 pm »
Hello All,

I am conducting a study exploring personal transformation associated with transcendent and spiritual experiences occurring in sports such as bicycling and bicycle touring. This study is being conducted for a doctoral dissertation in Transformative Studies at the California Institute of Integral Studies. The study consists of a very short survey that takes 8-10 minutes to complete. A link to this study can be found at: http://transcendencestudies.com

I value the unique contribution that you and your fellow members can make to my study and appreciate your consideration of participation in this study. Thank you for your interest in and support of my dissertation research.

Sincerely,

Mark Kohls, Ph.D. Candidate
Transformative Studies Department
California Institute of Integral Studies

Wow, the second study in nearly as many days...  nothing quite compares to feeling like a lab rat.

Don't have time at the present for your 8-10 minute survey, but will provide some data for you... spiritual experience?  Well, I'll tell you that every time I'm bombing down hill at 40+ mph I pray darn hard for my equipment not to fail, a dog or animal not to run out, or some other unseen hazard to cross my path.  Beyond that - just enjoy the ride.

The study has not yet been completed. Early feedback suggests that transcendent experiences within the context of sports occur for some people; and for some people, these transcendent may initiate significant personal change (I'm hedging here until the study is complete). A couple of interesting books on the subject: "Explores Of The Infinite" by Maria Coffey and "The Future Of The Body" by Michael Murphy.
