Gallup NM to Durango CO

I'm planning a one way shortest route road trip to my nephew's graduation from Gallup to Durango. Is there anything I need to know about this area?

All on Navajo Nation land.  I haven't been on that road, but have been on Hwy 191 (by car) in the same reservation.  I would do research and be careful.  Lots of poverty, alcohol, dogs.  Other people have reported positive experiences cycling Native American lands, so maybe I've just been unlucky.

I rode the last 50 miles or so from Farmington to Durango 30 years ago and it was wonderful.  Going back wasn't, because of the headwind.
