Not to say that most motels/hotels aren't clean,however I prefer to sleep in ( or on ) my own sleeping bag. I'll even put my sleeping pad on the floor and sleep on that,rather than the bed.

Tony I'm sure your palatial estates on both side of the Atlantic have top quality beds.

uh?? Hostels in California, at least the ones I stayed in, do not allow the use of sleeping bags. Seems sleeping bags sometimes bring uninvited guests

Yeah, in Oregon and California I stayed at a few hostels.  Some made me let them take any bedding and store it for me, allowing no bedding anywhere near the room.  One said as long as I didn't use it or unpack it I was OK.  But none allowed it to be unpacked or used.   That included any bedding at all.

There is a difference between hotels/motels and hostels.
The last time I stayed in a hotel or motel I can't recall anyone checking my sleeping gear. :D
